Sesame is an oilseed plant whose seed is eaten. Highly prized in the Middle East, where it is ground into a paste to make traditional tahini, it can also be eaten whole, dehydrated, roasted, or in oil. Whole sesame seeds (unhulled) are also very rich in minerals.
The origin of sesame, whose scientific name is Sesamum indicum, is unknown, but the African savannah is considered its place of origin, as more than thirty species are found there.
