Στα πρώτα χρόνια, φαίνεται ότι τα φύλλα αυτού του δέντρου τα έβραζαν για να φτιάξουν τσάι, εξ ου και το όνομα. Το αιθέριο έλαιο Τεϊόδεντρου είναι τα συμπυκνωμένα υγρά συστατικά που αποστάζονται με ατμό από τα φύλλα του δέντρου Melaleuca Alternifolia, το οποίο είναι εγγενές στη βορειοανατολική ακτή της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας της Αυστραλίας. Το λάδι φέρεται να έχει πολύτιμες αντισηπτικές και αντιμυκητιακές ιδιότητες λόγω των συστατικών που ονομάζονται τερπενοειδή και χρησιμοποιείται σε πολλά προϊόντα προσωπικής φροντίδας και φάρμακα σήμερα.

Το λάδι τεϊόδεντρου λέγεται ότι είναι καλό για την ανακούφιση από τη συμφόρηση, το κρυολόγημα, τον βήχα και τη γρίπη. Έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί για τη θεραπεία της ακμής, των μυκητιασικών λοιμώξεων, της πιτυρίδας, των κολπικών λοιμώξεων, των αιμορροΐδων, της φλεγμονής του ποδιού του αθλητή και πιστεύεται ότι καταπραΰνει τους πονεμένους μυς και τους τραυματισμούς των αρθρώσεων. Όταν προστίθεται στο νερό του μπάνιου, βοηθά στον έλεγχο των βακτηρίων. Το λάδι τεϊόδεντρου δεν πρέπει να λαμβάνεται εσωτερικά.
